Kafatek's 98mm LM Shuriken burrs for the Monolith Flat MAX. A proprietary geometry with Alpha coating, designed for espresso at the upper end of home brewing aspirations. Performance that rivals specialty grinders at significant cost.
The axes show the direction the burr leans toward. Higher values mean that quality stands out more than average; lower values mean it comes through lighter.
LM Shuriken burrs are designed in-house at Kafatek and mount only on the Monolith Flat MAX series. Available in SW, MD, and CR sub-variants — each tunes the geometry slightly differently across the espresso/filter range. The Monolith also pairs them with a conical 'pancake' pre-crusher (Kafatek-designed) for grind consistency.
Kafatek is a small American company that manufactures the Monolith grinder by hand, one unit at a time. The Monolith Flat MAX is their flagship — a 98mm flat-burr grinder with long waiting lists and a starting price around $4,500 that climbs with options. The burrs that ship with it are the LM Shuriken, designed in-house.
Kafatek's approach
Frank, who makes the Monolith, doesn't want to be "another specialty grinder." He tries to make something unique in every component: aluminum body, quiet German motor, custom tray system, and burrs designed specifically for this device.
The LM Shuriken is the result. Their teeth are arranged in a pattern reminiscent of a shuriken (a Japanese ninja star), with geometric features not found in any other flat burr on the market. The Alpha coating is proprietary and aimed at low retention and long burr life.
The cup
Users report a unique combination not found elsewhere: clarity at SSP HU level, but with fuller body and deeper sweetness. The Monolith Flat MAX doesn't force a choice between clarity and body — it delivers both.
In espresso, performance is at the level of specialty competition café grinders. In filter, the sharp edge of the distribution makes it easy to identify the specific variety, and sometimes even hear nuances too delicate for other burrs.
Pancake pre-crusher
A unique element of the Monolith Flat MAX: before the main flat burr, coffee passes through a small conical pancake crusher. This breaks beans into coarse pieces before the final cut at the flat burr. The result: lower load on the main teeth, higher consistency over time, and retention near zero.
SW, MD, and CR
Three sub-variants are available:
- SW (Single-purpose Wide): leans toward a wider geometry, more espresso-suited
- MD (Mid Duty): balanced geometry, broad roast compatibility
- CR (Clarity Refined): leans toward high clarity, more filter-suited
Buyers pick the variant for their style when ordering the grinder.
Who tends to consider this set
Only Monolith Flat MAX owners — the burrs don't fit other grinders, not even other 98mm setups. Most owners keep the stock burrs for years thanks to the long lifespan of the Alpha coating (Kafatek cites over 2000kg).
The wider context
Kafatek is part of a small group of "titan grinder" makers — exclusive grinders aimed at the upper end of the home market. Others in the group: Mythos, Versalab, and Titus (which uses SSP burrs with ZrN coating). For users interested at this level, Monolith and Titus are the two common picks.
