63mm conical burrs from the Niche Zero, manufactured by Mazzer in Italy. Full body and forgiving sweetness, friendly to light roasts thanks to the grinder's near-zero retention design.

The axes show the direction the burr leans toward. Higher values mean that quality stands out more than average; lower values mean it comes through lighter.
63mm conical burrs proprietary to the Niche Zero. The mounting and burr profile are specific to this grinder; not interchangeable with other 63mm conical patterns. SSP makes a 63mm conical alternative for the Niche Zero (sold separately).
The Niche Zero appeared in 2018 and reshaped the home-grinder market. Its rise was anchored on two advantages: near-zero retention (essentially all the coffee you grind comes out — none stays in the machine) and a conical design at home scale. A 63mm conical burr — counter to the specialty-flat trend developing in parallel.
Who makes the burrs
Mazzer of Italy manufactures the burrs for Niche. But the profile isn't identical to other commercial Mazzer sets — they were designed specifically for Niche, emphasizing a blend of body and reasonable clarity (not one extreme or the other).
The cup
Conical burrs deliver the classic character: full body, deep sweetness, high forgiveness. With medium and darker roasts, espresso from a Niche Zero competes with commercial grinders at twice the price. With modern light roasts, it won't surface fruity nuance like specialty flats, but it doesn't fail — thanks to the low retention, light beans stay clean in the cup with no off-flavors from grind hangover.
In filter, the conical takes routine criticism: "not enough clarity". That's relatively true, but in practice plenty of the community uses Niche Zero for filter with good results. The reason: the Niche delivers a spectrum wide enough to carry both fines that contribute body and larger particles for structure.
The SSP alternative
The Niche Zero has an SSP 63mm conical alternative. It runs more expensive and is more "specialty" in character (less body, more clarity). Some Niche owners upgrade to it; others prefer the stock burr.
Who tends to consider this set
Niche Zero owners replacing worn burrs. These burrs don't fit other grinders — they're proprietary to the Niche. Lifespan is around 1500-2000kg per reports, plenty for home users for a decade or more.
The grinder is worth noting
It's hard to discuss the burrs without mentioning that the Niche Zero as a grinder is the prevailing home standard: quiet, single-dose, with around 0.1g retention. The burr's success is part of the grinder's success.
