Option-O's in-house Mizen burrs, designed for the Lagom grinder line. The geometry targets high flavor separation and a sweet, juicy cup profile for modern light roasts.
The axes show the direction the burr leans toward. Higher values mean that quality stands out more than average; lower values mean it comes through lighter.
The Mizen series is sold as factory burrs in the Lagom lineup. Sizes vary by model — 64OM and 64ES were the original P64 variants, with the latest Mizen 64 designed around the Lagom 01.
Option-O is a specialty grinder maker from Hong Kong, established with their Lagom grinders. The Mizen series is their in-house burr line, developed with one goal: to give the Lagom P64 and later the Lagom 01 a unique profile not represented in SSP or other market burrs.
The philosophy
When specialty grinder makers entered the market, the default was to offer SSP burrs as a baseline or upgrade. Option-O wanted to offer their own alternative — a burr leaning on their sensory analysis, aimed at the very light roasts that the specialty community has been moving toward.
The cup in filter
Mizen produces especially high flavor separation. Different from SSP HU in that it doesn't drop body completely — the cup comes out sweet and juicy, with pronounced fruit notes and structured acidity. There's life in the cup without muddiness or murkiness.
The cup in espresso
Mizen-pulled espresso leans toward clarity and articulation rather than classic body. With very light roasts the profile works well and shows layers a commercial espresso wouldn't reach. With medium roasts emphasizing crema and body, Mizen is less of a fit — more traditional flats deliver that better.
Mizen 64OM and 64ES
The two original Mizen variants for the P64:
- 64OM (Optimum): aimed at especially high extraction with pronounced flavor separation. The pick for competition-grade light roasts.
- 64ES (Espresso): tuned for light-roast espresso, with a slightly more structured profile.
Mizen 64 (Lagom 01)
The newer version, tuned for the Lagom 01 (Option-O's home flagship). Geometry is refined and integrated with the 01's alignment system, which delivers high parallelism.
An SSP alternative
Lagom owners working with competition-grade light roasts will compare Mizen to SSP HU/Lab Sweet. The main difference: Mizen leans toward more sweetness and juiciness, SSP HU toward more cleanliness and extreme clarity. Neither is "better" — both play at a high level, but they present the bean a bit differently.
Who tends to consider this set
Mostly Lagom owners who want Option-O's proprietary profile. Also users looking for a "sweet and juicy" character that's distinct from the HU or MP edges, which they can reach through the Mizen.
