The standard burr set for the EG-1. The DB-1 versatile geometry balances sweetness, body and clarity. Equally suited to espresso and filter, considered Weber's recommended default.

The axes show the direction the burr leans toward. Higher values mean that quality stands out more than average; lower values mean it comes through lighter.
DB-1 ships as the factory burr in most EG-1 configurations. Less specialized than DB-2 (max clarity for filter) but more versatile across daily use cases.
The DB-1 is the set that has shipped with the EG-1 since the first model. It's been refined over the years, but the philosophy hasn't changed: versatility.
The approach
When Weber's team developed DB-1, they didn't want a burr specialized for one extreme. They wanted a set that works well for espresso with adequate crema and for filter with reasonable clarity, without compromising either. That came at the cost of not being "the best" in any single category — but "very good" in all of them.
The cup
DB-1 produces a cup with real balance: noticeable sweetness, sufficient body, and clarity that lets you identify a specific variety. Fruity aromas come through clearly without becoming extreme; espresso crema is adequate, though not the heavy classical-Italian thickness.
Compared to DB-2 (the Ultra), DB-1 is less distinct for filter but friendlier to medium-roast espresso. Compared to SSP burrs, it's close to Lab Sweet in character — both focus on a sweetness-clarity balance, but DB-1 is gentler on espresso and less overtly "sweet" than Lab Sweet.
Who tends to consider this set
- EG-1 owners whose single grinder serves all their brew methods
- Users without one specific bean lineup — moving between light specialty and commercial blends
- People who don't want to swap burrs between methods
Who should pick something else
Users focused exclusively on filter with competition-grade specialty beans will get more from DB-2. Users focused exclusively on medium-dark roast espresso will find a more traditional fit in something like the Mazzer Major (assuming they're not committed to the EG-1 platform).
The SSP alternative
The EG-1 also has an SSP 80mm option. The key difference: SSP leans to one end (HU = clarity, MP = acidity), DB-1 stays in the middle. EG-1 owners working only with light roasts usually prefer SSP HU 80mm; those wanting one set for every case go with DB-1.
